Sir John Chilcot is inviting submissions from anyone who feels they could help the probe fulfil its remit.

The inquiry, which started work at the end of July is examining the period from 2001 to the end of July 2009. It will consider the UK's involvement in Iraq, how decisions were made and will identify lessons that can be learned.

The panel has not yet begun hearing from witnesses, but earlier this week held the first in a series of meetings for bereaved families and Iraq veterans to say which areas they want it to examine.

Angry relatives told the panel that former prime minister Tony Blair must be held accountable for taking the nation to war. People can either write to the inquiry or submit information via a special form on its website.

Sir John said: "It's very important to the Committee that we receive information from as wide a variety of sources as possible. We want to be certain that we have considered every angle of the UK's involvement in Iraq. Since starting our work at the end of July we have examined a huge amount of material already, but we want to ensure that we have access to all relevant material.

"Sometimes what people will have to offer is an opinion, or a document, or an insight about some aspect of the Iraq conflict. It is all potentially valid in terms of our investigation.

"There may be someone out there with a crucial bit of information which could show an issue in a different light. It would be a great shame if that opportunity was missed."

He is asking for information which is relevant to the inquiry's terms of reference, covering the period from 2001 to the end of July 2009, embracing the run-up to the conflict in Iraq, the military action and its aftermath.
