Public sector 'non-jobs' revealed

31 January 2008
The TaxPayers' Alliance said public sector workers were being paid more than equivalent employees in private firms.
Public sector employment increased by 14,000 in the third quarter of 2008 while 128,000 jobs were lost in private companies, said the report.
The group published a top 10 of "non-jobs" advertised by local authorities, including street football co-ordinator (almost £20,000 a year), European programme policy officer (up to £37,109), community space challenger co-ordinator (up to £33,777) and public affairs manager (up to £45,189).
Matthew Elliott, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: "In times of economic hardship it is vitally important that the public sector tightens its belt, just as families are having to. With the public finances in such a mess, taxpayers can't afford for quangos and councils to splash out on 'non-jobs' that would be an indulgence even in the economic good times."
A spokesman for the Local Government Association, said: "The TaxPayers' Alliance are on a different planet if they think that councils aren't being affected by the tough financial climate that everyone is facing. As the recession bites, local councils are having to tighten their belts in exactly the same way that hard-pressed families are.
"From lollipop ladies to street cleaners and librarians, town halls employ people that provide over 800 vital services that many local residents rely on to get through the day.
"At this time of repossessions and redundancies, even more people need the vital support that only councils can provide.
"Three out of four councils have had to look again at their budgets over the last few months because of the recession."
