Queen lives dream at Kentucky Derby
06 January 2007
On the third day of her six-day trip to the US, the 81-year-old monarch headed to Churchill Downs in Louisville.
She was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh and close friends William and Sarah Farish, whose Land's End farm she was staying on.
Thousands of racegoers were hoping to catch a glimpse of the royal visitor at the 133rd derby. But the Queen was up on Millionaire's Row - an exclusive set of private rooms, costing thousands of pounds to hire.
Meade Fogel, one of the racegoers, said the Queen had a spot right near the window. "Everybody stood up and clapped. She's gone to sit right by the window so she can look over the course."
Mrs Fogel added that the Queen was undertaking a tour of stud farms on Sunday. "She's coming to my family's farm so I might see her again."
Bets were being taken earlier on the shade of the Queen's hat with blue and white-silver being the joint favourite.
However, she turned up in a pale lime-green coat with a two-coloured hat - pink on top and with a large green rim.
One of the other VIPs in the Queen's room, Virginia Bobins said: "She was just having a little tea and looking fabulous. People aren't going up to her but they are taking photographs."
The Queen has visited Kentucky four times before, staying with Mr Farish, who is the former US Ambassador to Britain and also a horse breeder. But she has never before made it to the Kentucky Derby until now.
