Queen praises winning games team
09 January 2007
In a message she said: "I send my warm congratulations to everyone involved in Glasgow's successful bid to hold the 2014 Commonwealth Games - the third time that a Scottish city has been chosen as a venue for the games.
"My good wishes go to you all and to the people of Glasgow as you celebrate this impressive achievement."
UK Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell said: "This is a terrific achievement for Glasgow and for Scotland - winning the right to stage a second Commonwealth Games in the UK so early in the new millennium.
"I know everyone involved with the Glasgow bid will feel the same sense of elation that we did when London's Olympic bid was successful and I look forward to co-operating with the Games organisers as they develop their exciting plans over the next seven years.
"Glasgow 2014 can - and will be - an inspiration to people in all parts of the UK."
Scottish Tory leader Annabel Goldie said: "This is fantastic news for Scotland and for Glasgow - I know the city and the people will do us proud.
"It will leave a lasting legacy of inspired youngsters and an even more revitalised city."
Julia Bracewell, chairman of official sports body sportscotland, said: "There is a huge opportunity to build a momentum for sport in the lives of all communities in Scotland.
"This will need long-term leadership, planning and investment. We must rise to the challenge and not miss this opportunity."
