Queen 'shocked' at campus killings

The Queen has been left "shocked and saddened" at the shooting of 32 people on an American college campus.

The massacre took place at Virginia Tech University on Monday when a lone gunman shot students and lecturers before turning the gun on himself.

The victims included a number of staff members who were killed when the gunman began firing in an engineering building containing classrooms and laboratories.

The monarch is due to visit the state of Virginia at the beginning of May during a royal trip to the US.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: "The Queen was shocked and saddened to hear of the news of the shooting in Virginia.

"She will be kept informed."

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are to pay a two day visit to Virginia on May 3 and 4.

The monarch is due to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown Settlement.

It will be her first state visit to America for 16 years.
