Queen to meet shooting survivors

The Queen will meet survivors of the Virginia Tech massacre when she makes an official state visit to the US next month, it has been reported.

She will meet students from the university as part of her first visit to the Capitol in Richmond, state capital of Virginia.

Virginia Tech in Blacksburg suffered America's deadliest ever college shooting on April 16 when loner Cho Seung-Hui gunned down 32 people.

Among the students who may meet the Queen are some of the 26 people wounded in the shootings who have recovered sufficiently to travel.

This week Buckingham Palace said the Queen would recognise the tragedy but would not visit the campus where the murders took place.

A Palace spokeswoman said: "The college undoubtedly has other priorities - a royal visit is not going to be one of them.

"There are other ways that the tragedy can be recognised."

It is most likely that the Queen will make reference to the shootings during a keynote speech in Virginia.

Buckingham Palace said last week that she was left shocked and saddened on hearing of the incident.

The Queen and Prince Philip's six-day tour begins on May 3 in Virginia, where they will mark the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown Settlement.
