Rail delays expected post-strike

Rail passengers could face possible delays as a knock-on effect of a 48-hour walkout by union members.

A two-day strike by members of Aslef and the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) led to travel chaos for thousands of commuters.

The walkout has now finished but services are still expected to be hit including trains between London's Liverpool Street and Stansted Airport.

The unions are currently in a dispute with National Express East Anglia.

Aslef announced it was to set up a hardship fund to support drivers facing financial difficulties because of the industrial action.

Aslef said it was taking measures to help drivers because it could see no prospect of an early deal to resolve a dispute with National Express East Anglia.

Further strikes are planned for next week, and will be joined by members of the Transport Salaried Staffs Association, unless the deadlock is broken.

Keith Norman, general secretary of Aslef, said: "We can frankly see no solution to this dispute in sight, and it looks as if we'll have to dig in for the long term. We will make sure that no member has to return to work because of financial considerations."

Mr Norman said he was astonished at the "lack of leadership and dearth of compromise" he claimed had been the hallmark of the company's approach to the dispute over pay and conditions.

Talks will be held on Monday but Mr Norman said, unless the company showed due consideration to the views of staff, further action would take place on August 13/14 and 20/21.
