Rail workers prepare to strike

Members of the RMT union will begin an 18-hour walkout at noon in a dispute with Network Rail (NR).
But another union involved in the same dispute, Unite, will not be taking similar action and voiced concerns about the action taken by the RMT.
In a letter released by NR, Unite said it was "loath to criticise another union" but could not understand why RMT members were being asked to take strike action when negotiations were "clearly still ongoing".
The RMT said earlier this week that NR chiefs has "scuppered" the progress being made on talks about harmonisation of pay and conditions and that the strike by 12,000 rail maintenance would go ahead.
The RMT has accused NR of planning to leave vans loaded with dangerous materials parked on public roads to combat the effect of a maintenance workers' strike this weekend.
But NR said the claims by the RMT union were "clearly ridiculous" and that the most dangerous thing in the vans was "the fuel in their tanks".
