Record crowds see Grand National

Record crowds flocked to Aintree racecourse for one of the warmest Grand National days ever.

More than 70,000 punters watched Irish horse Silver Birch, ridden by Robbie Power, win the biggest horse race of the year.

Weather forecasters said temperatures had peaked at an unseasonably high 22 degrees Celsius.

A spokesman for MeteoGroup UK said: "This is about 72 degrees Fahrenheit and it is at least ten degrees above the average we would expect for this time of year."

Horses were doused with cold water and extra supplies of bottled water and ice were brought into the course.

Aintree bosses said the event had been one of the best ever at the racecourse, which has undergone a £35 million redevelopment.

For the Grand National itself, bookmakers reporting a record turnover of more than £250 million.

The bookies were celebrating after the lightly backed 33-1 shot Silver Birch won the race and favourites Point Barrow and Joes Edge failed to perform.

Ben Clarke, a spokesman for William Hill, said: "The Irish stranglehold on the Grand National continues and this horse will have dented the coffers of our shops in Ireland. However, in what was the most open National in a decade, with none of the fancied horses making the frame it's like Christmas come early."

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said the event passed off peacefully with only a handful of arrests.
