Record numbers heading to Australia
01 January 2009
This winter's freezing temperatures combined with the gloomy economic outlook have prompted a huge rise in the numbers of Brits jumping ship to the Antipodes.
A new survey reveals that tropical Queensland was top destination in Australia last year.
The Move Monitor survey, conducted on behalf of home and business moving company Pickfords revealed a 31% increase in the number of individuals and families who moved from the UK to Australia in 2008, compared with 2007.
The survey tracked the relocation trends of over 7000 British people who moved overseas last year.
Queensland, with its picturesque coastline, was the number one relocation destination in Australia, although the survey also noted a 44% increase in the number of people moving to Adelaide and a 42% increase in moves to Melbourne.
Pickfords' managing director Kevin Pickford moved to Australia himself in 1982 and then returned to England in 2005.
He said: "I fully understand the draw of Australia, its attractions and benefits.
"I'm sure the quality of life, sunnier climate and diverse job opportunities play a big part in people's relocation decision."
