Reid vow on 28-day terror detention

The maximum time terror suspects can be held without charge will not be extended beyond 28 days unless agreement can be reached across parties, Home Secretary John Reid has said.

It was the first time Mr Reid had placed such a crucial emphasis on reaching consensus over the controversial issue.

Only last week, Home Office minister Tony McNulty told MPs that he hoped to create a new system which would extend the period suspects can be held without charge.

Both the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats have expressed their opposition to such a move.

The Home Office's original proposal to increase the maximum from 14 to 90 days led to Prime Minister Tony Blair's first defeat in the House of Commons in 2005.

On Tuesday, Mr Reid told the Commons' all-party Home Affairs Select Committee: "If there is no national consensus then I will not proceed with it."

Labour backbencher David Winnick interjected: "Good."

Mr Reid continued that he had an obligation to examine the issue if police were calling for the 28 day period to be extended.
