Report to reignite MPs' pay row

The row over public sector pay is set to intensify after plans for hiking MPs' salaries by 2.8% are unveiled.

A report from the Senior Salaries Review Body is also expected to suggest inflation-linked rises over the following two years and more than a thousand pounds in special "catch-up" payments.

Gordon Brown has called for MPs to show restraint and accept just 1.9% following a tight pay round in the rest of the public sector and fears over rising prices.

But despite the Prime Minister's stance being backed by the Tory and Lib Dem leaders, many backbenchers believe they deserve the extra cash after three years of real-terms cuts.

The showdown will culminate next week, when the Commons is due to vote on the issue.

The recommendations are certain to be received with fury by police and teachers, whose recent awards were significantly lower.

Schools Secretary Ed Balls announced that teachers will be offered 2.45%, with 2.3% rises in 2009 and 2010.

The National Union of Teachers immediately said it was considering balloting members over strike action, because the increase was below the Retail Prices Index inflation rate of 4%.

Meanwhile, police officers' leaders questioned why the Government had felt able to breach its 2% target for teachers, but had effectively reduced their award to 1.9% by delaying its implementation.

Earlier this week David Cameron said he supported giving an independent body full responsibility for setting MPs' pay - a step which is already being considered by ministers.
