Review of forces' mental health

Statistics for the number of Armed Forces personnel reporting mental health problems and diagnosed with mental health conditions are being published by the Ministry of Defence.

The figures from the Defence Analytical Services Agency, (DASA) an MoD agency, will be released to coincide with the publication of a mental health special edition of the Journal of the Royal Army Medical Corps (JRAMC).

The journal edition will look at treatments available for service personnel and veterans with mental health conditions.

The findings are being unveiled at a news conference on military mental health attended by senior figures such as Brigadier John Keeling, director of MoD Healthcare, and Dr Ian Palmer, head of the Veterans' Mental Assessment Programme.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said the DASA statistics would give the latest figures for the last quarter of 2007.

"We have changed the way that we collate mental health statistics, with the publication of this quarter, we will have a full year's worth of data," he said.

The news conference comes as British Armed Forces face a number of tests including operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

There have been 121 British service personnel killed in Afghanistan since the start of operations in October 2001.

The British military death toll in Iraq since hostilities began in March 2003 stands at 176.

A study carried out by a team at King's College, London, and published last year, found that members of the Armed Forces undergoing prolonged periods of deployment were more likely to drink too much, suffer stress and have problems at home.
