Rhys parents attend murder trial

The parents of schoolboy Rhys Jones arrived at court for the start of their son's murder trial.

Stephen and Melanie Jones arrived at Liverpool Crown Court for the trial of Sean Mercer, 18, who is accused of shooting Rhys dead on August 22 last year.

The couple, who attended the many preliminary hearings before the trial, were accompanied by police family liaison officers who have worked with the family since the killing in Croxteth Park, Liverpool.

Mercer, of Good Shepherd Close, Croxteth, denies murder.

Next to him in the dock when the case begins will be six people charged with assisting an offender. They all deny the charge.

The murder accused's mother Janette Mercer, 49, with whom he lived, also goes before a judge at Liverpool Crown Court.

She has been charged separately with three others accused of perverting the course of justice.

They are Frank Yates, 48, and his wife Marie Yates, 50, of Dodman Road, and James Hughes, 22, of Willow Way, both Croxteth.
