Rhys police quiz boy, 16, over gun

Detectives investigating the murder of Rhys Jones have questioned a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of possessing a firearm.

The teenager was held after a police raid in the Norris Green area of Liverpool last week.

He was later questioned by officers investigating the murder of 11-year-old Rhys, shot dead by a youth on a BMX while on his way home from playing football.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "Following the execution of a search warrant last week Merseyside Police have arrested a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of possession of a firearm.

"The youth, from L11 (Norris Green area) was questioned by detectives at a police station on Merseyside and has been released on police bail pending further inquiries."

Rhys died after he was shot in the neck as he walked across a pub car park near his home in Croxteth Park. Police believe he was the innocent victim of a gangland feud and the killer had another target.

Officers have made a number of arrests in the hunt for the killer, but no-one has yet been charged with the murder.

Football-mad Rhys, a junior player and Everton supporter, was shot on the evening of August 22 and died hours later in hospital, never regaining consciousness.

His mother, Melanie, 41, and father, Stephen, 44, gave a heartrending interview hours after his death, appealing for information to catch the killer.

Police revealed CCTV images of a youth on a BMX-type bike on BBC1's Crimewatch programme last week, which prompted more calls to the detective team. It was hoped the grainy images would help identify the killer.
