Right-to-roam coast path idea
08 January 2007
He said he wanted to create an "access corridor" around the English coastline.
With Scotland already having a legal right of access to its shores and the creation of a coastal path under way in Wales, it would open up the entire 9,040 miles of mainline British coastline to the public.
"England's coastline is a national treasure. It should be the birthright of every citizen," Mr Miliband said.
"Many parts of the coast are already accessible, but some are not. We want to create an access corridor so that people can walk the entire length of the English coast."
Currently, the public only has the right of access to about half the English coastline, and Mr Miliband's proposals are likely to run into heavy opposition from landowners who would be affected.
It is reported the corridor plan will take about 10 years to establish at an estimated cost of £50m.
The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said it was due to launch a public consultation on improving access to the coast within the next few months.
