Riot police 'should wear numbers'

The Camp for Climate Action, which released new video footage of alleged police attacks on non-violent protesters, published its report Demonstrating Respect for Rights? on policing at the G20 camp earlier this month.
Copies of the report are being sent to the Home Secretary, MPs and members of the House of Lords. It is also available online to the public.
The report said "policing was violent and disproportionate" but was the type of policing previously experienced at climate camps.
"What was different this time is that just down the road, near the Bank of England and other G20 protests, someone died," the report said.
"The scenes we have seen leading up to Ian Tomlinson's death, and more recently with the female protestor being struck with a baton, are not unusual in the context of protests.
"In the mind of the police there always seems to be a violent minority present to justify the kettling of everyone for hours with brutal indifference, and the use of excessive force by police officers."
The report said policing was "relatively relaxed" on April 1 until just after 7pm when "police streamed into the camp by force with their batons and shields in full offensive use".
Campers, and people who had simply been passing through, were held for nearly five hours, the report said.
