Rise in three generation households

A growing number of households include at least three generations of the same family, a trend expected to continue because of the tougher economic climate, according to a new report.

A survey by Lloyds TSB showed a huge rise in "multi-generational" living, as people waited longer to buy a house, coupled with increasing life expectancy.

A growing number of under 30-year-olds were set to delay stepping on to the housing ladder as they waited for the economy to pick up, said the report.

The poll of 500 people living with at least three generations showed most believed the arrangement had brought their family closer together, although some complained about a lack of privacy or more arguments.

Inner city areas were most likely to have three generation households, according to the research.

Phil Loney of Lloyds TSB Insurance said: "More and more middle-aged people are taking on the care of older family members and supporting children who are going through tough times."
