Road crash involves 43 vehicles

At least 43 vehicles have been involved in a crash during thick fog and rain, police said.

At least one person died in the incident on the A20 just outside Dover, Kent Police said.

Among the vehicles were HGVs, cars and a coach carrying children from a school in Poole, in Dorset.

A Kent Police spokeswoman said no one on the school coach was injured.

Kent Police later said a total of 43 vehicles were involved.

They included the coach, 35 cars, five lorries, one police car and one fire appliance.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said it sent six pumps to the scene and that there were "lots of walking wounded".

Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible and take "extreme care" because of the "very poor weather conditions", police added.

Drivers heading for the Eurotunnel should continue to use the M20.
