Robberies up in new crime figures

27 January 2007
The number of robberies recorded by police jumped 8% to 26,600 in the final quarter of last year. The figure had fallen to as low as 21,200 at the end of 2004.
It was the seventh quarter in a row to show a period-on-period increase, and the first time robbery levels had topped 26,000 since April-June 2003.
Total violent crime in England and Wales was down 1%, but drugs offences rose 3%.
The British Crime Survey (BCS), which questions tens of thousands of people about their experiences of crime, also found more people were concerned about anti-social behaviour.
Three of the indicators used by the Home Office to measure fears of yobbish behaviour showed a statistically significant increase, while only one showed a fall.
There were rises in concerns about noisy neighbours, people being rowdy or drunk in public and people using or dealing drugs, while worries about abandoned cars showed a fall.
Public confidence in the criminal justice system also declined, the BCS suggested.
Shadow home secretary David Davis said: "These figures betray the Government's continuing failure to tackle the menace of street crime in this country. They also show widespread concern about drug use and an increase in drug crime. The Government cannot ignore the link between these two factors."
There was good news for the Government as data showed overall recorded crime fell by 2% in October to December compared with the same period the previous year.
