Rock fails to dent Brown's support

Gordon Brown goes into Labour's annual conference next week with his support undamaged by the Northern Rock crisis, according to an opinion poll.

A YouGov poll for Telegraph.co.uk and Telegraph TV put support for Labour on 39% - just one point down on last month.

That put Labour six points ahead of the Conservatives who were unchanged on 33%. The Liberal Democrats were up two on 16%.

Mr Brown enjoyed an even bigger advantage when it came to the question of who would make the best Prime Minister with 42% support, compared to 20% for Tory leader David Cameron and just 6% for the Liberal Democrats' Sir Menzies Campbell.

And the poll found 36% believed that Labour would be best at running the economy as against 28% for the Tories.

That echoed the findings of an ICM poll for BBC2's Newsnight which found 34% thought Labour had the best economic policies, compared to 22% for the Conservatives and 15% for the Liberal Democrats. Some 19% said they did not know.

The ICM poll also indicated a high level of confidence among voters about the economic climate and their own financial prospects.

Some 10% of those questioned said they were very confident about the economic future and 61% were fairly confident, against 21% who said they were not very confident.

These results show a slight rise from the last time the same question was asked four years ago in 2003. Then, just 8% were very confident and 48% were fairly confident.

The YouGov poll was carried out between September 19 and 21 and based on 2,085 voters. ICM Research interviewed 1,029 adults by telephone on September 19 and 20.
