Ross handed award for 'new music'

Jonathan Ross has been presented with a music award for the exposure he has given to new artists.

Ross, 48, was handed his Music Industry Trusts' (MITs) gong by pop star George Michael at a ceremony in central London.

Described by the award's judging panel as "the UK's most important broadcasting star-maker", Ross received the award for his "hugely influential exposure for new artists".

MITs award committee chairman, David Munns said: "We salute Jonathan in recognition of his passion for music, enthusiasm for discovering and encouraging musicians and the importance of his two shows for artist development, providing valuable support in challenging times."

The presenter can add the award to the three Baftas he won for his television work on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross.

Ross was also honoured with an OBE in 2005 for services to broadcasting and celebrated by playing The Sex Pistols' God Save The Queen on his Saturday morning radio show.

However, Ross has courted controversy and his risque humour has often landed him in hot water with bosses and industry watchdogs.

Last year, he was suspended for three months without pay by the BBC for a series of lewd messages left on veteran actor Andrew Sachs' answer phone. The BBC Trust described his actions, along with comedian Russell Brand, as a "deplorable intrusion with no editorial justification".

And two years ago Ross caused offence at the British Comedy Awards when he joked his salary was worth one thousand BBC journalists - shortly after the BBC announced plans for thousands of job cuts.

Despite the controversy, Ross remains one of the industry's best-known faces and he is still one of the BBC's highest-paid presenters.
