The Anstruther Fish Bar in Fife won the 2008 national Fish & Chip Shop of the Year competition at a ceremony in London.
Prince William was a regular visitor during his university days at St Andrews, while Oscar-winning actors Robert De Niro, Robert Duvall and Tom Hanks have all sampled its wares.
Shop owners Robert and Alison Smith were crowned champions after a judging process which includes a customer vote, taste tests, two rounds of shop inspections and a presentation to a panel of industry experts.
Shops are judged not only on the quality of their fish and chips, but on all areas of the business including responsible seafood sourcing, customer service, food hygiene, staff training and community spirit. The competition is in its 21st year.
Alison said: "Being named best in Scotland for the fourth time was fantastic for us, but claiming the national title has always been our ambition, it's the ultimate goal in our industry.
"The title is just reward for our hard-working staff and a great way of reminding our customers, and fans throughout the UK, where to buy the best fish and chips."
They received the award from chef Simon Rimmer, star of BBC 2's Something For The Weekend, at a London hotel. They also lifted the award for Contribution to the Local Community.
Colman's of South Shields, Tyne and Wear, was named second best shop in the country with North West regional winners Thornton Fisheries, of Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire in third place.
The other shortlisted shops were: Finnegan's in Porthcawl, Wales; The Fish and Chicken Inn in Ballymena, Northern Ireland; Merchant Fish Bar in Bewdley, Worcestershire; Petrou Brothers in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire; Scooby Snax in Colchester, Essex; The Plaice in Winchester, Hampshire and Daniels Fish and Chips in Weymouth, Dorset.
