Royal honeymoon photo aids research

A signed photograph of the Prince and Princess of Wales taken in Scotland during their honeymoon is to be auctioned to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

The sale is being organised by businesswoman Andrea Aston, whose mother-in-law died from breast cancer.

The photograph, taken on the Royal Estate at Balmoral just days after the wedding of Charles and Diana, has been given for auction by a private collector.

It originally came from a member of the Royal Household who wished to remain anonymous and was purchased by the collector from a leading dealer in royal autographs in America.

The auction will take place at a charity ball at the London Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square, on June 9. The photograph is signed "Lots of Love, Diana" by the late Princess of Wales. Some experts believe it could fetch over £3,000 at auction.

Mrs Aston, of Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, said: "I am told she rarely signed photographs and there are believed to be only a few signed photographs from the early days of her marriage to Prince Charles."

Other items being auctioned at the ball include a Manchester United replica shirt signed by the late George Best.

High bids are also expected for a limited edition of a 22-carat gold disc from the Rat Pack's famous album Live At The Sands. Memorabilia signed by Rat Pack members Frank Sinatra, Sammy David Jnr and Dean Martin is also expected to raise thousands of pounds.

All profits from the event go to Cancer Research UK to help fund research into breast cancer.

Cancer Research UK area volunteer manager for Milton Keynes Elizabeth Melvin said: "We welcome initiatives like the ball and auction which help to fund vital research into the causes, treatment and prevention of cancer. Our aim is to beat cancer by raising funds for pioneering, world-class research."
