Ex-Wigan Warriors player David Myers, 37, left the road between junctions 17 and 18 on the M6 and his van hit a bridge support.
Ninety minutes later a family of six were killed in a crash further down the same stretch of motorway.
Wigan's performance director Joe Lydon said: "David and I played in the same Wigan team in the early 1990s. It is such a tragedy to learn about this news and my thoughts are with his family."
Mr Myers played for the club between 1990 and 1992, making 69 appearances and scoring 38 tries.
A Wigan Warriors spokesman said the winger would be remembered particularly for the 1991 Challenge Cup Final where he scored a vital try at Wembley to help Wigan beat bitter rivals St Helens, 13-8."
Mr Myers, of Warrington, Cheshire, also played for Bradford Bulls and Widnes.
Pat Cluskey, Widnes's operations manager, said: "David was a popular member of the Widnes team and will no doubt be remembered by many for his celebration as Widnes beat Leeds in the 1993 Challenge Cup Semi-Final at Central Park. The side's performance that day was straight out of the textbook and one that was worthy of winning a place at Wembley."
Bradford Bulls spokesman Stuart Duffy said: "As a former Bradford Bulls player we are absolutely devastated that David was killed in such tragic circumstances.
"Our sympathy goes out to his family."
