They put up a great fight but lost 15-6 to a strong South African side in last night's match in the Stade de France.
Controversy continued over the disallowed 43rd minute "try" by Mark Cueto, which would have put England back into the match if it had been given.
It was disallowed after lengthy deliberation by video referee Stuart Dickinson.
The Australian decided the Sale Sharks player's foot made contact with the touchline as he dived over under pressure from Springboks number eight Danie Rossouw's despairing tackle.
Cueto said: "My gut instinct when I went over the line was that it was a try. As a player, you generally know when you are in or not. For me, it was 100% a try.
"From the front you could see the grounding was fine. From the back, they were obviously looking at the foot, but to me my foot came off the ground as I went over the line. I was amazed when it wasn't awarded - I couldn't believe it."
Bookmaker Coral agreed, saying it would pay out to any punters who backed Cueto at odds of 14-1 to score the first try in the final.
Spokesman David Stevens said: "England's defeat spared us a multi-million pound payout to patriotic punters, and although the records will show Mark Cueto did not score a try, we disagree with the video ref, and are therefore paying out to anyone that backed Cueto to score the first try.
"It won't ease the pain that England backers are feeling this morning, but we're hoping our gesture will be of some consolation to Cueto fans."
