'Sales boom' for quit-smoking aids

Sales of anti-smoking aids in the UK are set to break through the £100 million mark this year, according to a new report.

The boom will hit England following the smoking ban in public places, according to market analyst Mintel.

Growth will continue over the next four years, with sales predicted to hit £140 million by 2011.

New products to help smokers kick the habit are being launched around the world, Mintel's global new products database shows.

In the US, a drink called Niclite has been launched which contains nicotine to help stop cravings.

And in Italy a mouth spray has been developed which is claimed to make the user feel nauseous when they smoke.

Mintel spokesman David Jago said anti-smoking laws being introduced in many countries around the world would prompt an increase in anti-smoking aids.

"Sales of products are set for a boom period, particularly in England where a ban on smoking in public places is coming into place this weekend," he said.

Mintel includes nicotine replacement lozenges, gums, patches and inhalers in its predicted sales figures for anti-smoking aids.
