The teenager, named by sources as Shaquille Clarke-Adams, was in a stable condition in Leeds General Infirmary after being stabbed three times in the chest and stomach in a classroom at Allerton Grange School, in Moortown, Leeds.
A 13-year-old boy was in police custody after being arrested in connection with Friday's incident.
West Yorkshire Police were called after Shaquille was stabbed with a knife, which had been brought into the school.
A force spokeswoman said both boys were pupils at Allerton Grange, and according to reports Shaquille is a talented footballer on the books of Leeds United's youth academy.
Students spoke of their shock at the attack, which they said took place in the school's D-block.
A 16-year-old Year 11 pupil said: "It's really shocking. Not many kids around here carry knives. We're just really surprised."
One worried mother, who went to Allerton Grange, where her daughter is a pupil, after hearing news about the stabbing, said she believed there had been trouble there recently. A father who came to pick up his daughter at the end of the day, also said he had heard there were "factions" in the school.
But Richard Morris, chairman of governors at the school, described the attack as "highly unusual" and said the pupils were usually well-behaved.
Speaking outside the school, he said: "Nothing like this has happened in the school before and it is all the more shocking because students' behaviour is normally of a high standard."
