Scotland Yard police sent to Mumbai

Scotland Yard officers are travelling to Mumbai to help Indian authorities as they struggled to restore order in the city devastated by terror attacks.

Police and military forces were sweeping two luxury hotels for hostages after Indian commandos killed the final three gunmen holding out at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

But police officials said up to 40 people were still trapped in the Oberoi Hotel and a handful more were awaiting rescue in the Taj Mahal.

One Briton has been confirmed to be among the 110 people killed when gunmen launched co-ordinated attacks on targets in central Mumbai, including the two hotels and the city's packed railway station.

Andreas Liveras, the founder of a luxury yacht business, who was aged in his 70s, was pronounced dead on arrival at St George's Hospital in the city.

More than seven other Britons were among the 300 injured in the attacks.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed that officers were on their way to the city but he said he could not give any details about what they would do there.

He said: "The Indian authorities have primacy so it would be a matter for them."
