Search for black role models

A national campaign to find role models for black youths has been launched as the Government struggles to get to grips with knife crime.

Communities Secretary Hazel Blears said the drive was "crucial" to helping disadvantaged young people fulfil their potential and head off social problems.

At least 20 black role models from all walks of life will be chosen by a panel made up of Ozwald Boateng, the Savile Row designer, Tim Campbell, entrepreneur and winner of TV's The Apprentice, Leroy Logan, a Scotland Yard chief superintendent, and Simon Woolley, founder and director of Operation Black Vote.

Those selected will then tour schools and young offenders' institutions, and take part in events in a bid to show black youths - who are disproportionately likely to become embroiled in crime and violence - what can be achieved.

The Reach project was first unveiled by Ms Blears last December. She said there were thousands of candidates, and the Government was determined to harness their influence.

"It is crucial that we improve the life chances of young black boys," she said. "Too few black men and boys are achieving their full potential and the consequences of that are being seen socially and economically.

"There needs to be a collective effort to combat underachievement and low aspirations amongst our young black men. These kids need realistic alternatives to show them that every opportunity is available to them."

A website - www.direct.gov.uk/reach - has been set up for would-be role models, and the selection process runs until September 2.
