Search for Briton in Turkey halted

A woman whose husband went missing while on holiday in Turkey said she was in turmoil after it emerged the search for him has ended.

John Kirkham, 67, from Lancashire, went missing while walking along the Lycian Way, near the resort of Olu Deniz in the south of the country, on August 10.

He set off alone on a six-mile hike along the trail, named by a newspaper as one of the 10 most beautiful in the world, but never returned.

His wife, Sandra Kirkham, 63, said: "John's a very capable walker - he plans his walks in great detail. He didn't need to walk with anyone. He was setting off at 6am so by the time he finished the walk the heat of the day wouldn't have been up. He said he would get the last village bus back and if he didn't get the bus he would get a taxi."

The couple were on holiday with their granddaughter Carys, 14, and one of her friends.

Mrs Kirkham said she contacted local police at around 8pm when he failed to return. She described her husband's disappearance as a "mystery" but believes the answers lie in the village of Kozagnac, where Mr Kirkham was last seen.

It is thought he asked a villager, who did not speak any English, if he had seen his camera.

Mrs Kirkham, a retired civil servant, returned to her Fleetwood home on Tuesday.

She said of her husband, who she married 43 years ago: "I don't want to think that something bad has happened to him and he's lying hurt or that someone has taken him. The thought that this wonderful person has ended up like that is too much to bear.

"My emotions are all over. I have cried, begged and pleaded. I'm just in complete turmoil about my husband. It's a complete nightmare. I'm preparing for the worst, but I need him to come home. I need him to be close to me."
