Search teams hunt for missing chef

Detectives looking for missing chef Claudia Lawrence have drafted in civilian search and rescue teams to scour open ground.

North Yorkshire Police said 65 people, some using search and rescue dogs, are being deployed alongside 100 police officers, close to the University of York where Miss Lawrence worked.

Meanwhile, thousands of students have been asked for their help in the search for the popular chef.

Student union officers have been putting up posters around the Heslington campus asking if anyone has seen her.

Police fear Miss Lawrence, 35, who has been missing for more than a week, may have come to harm after meeting someone she knew.

She was last seen close to her home in Heworth, York, after she finished work at the University of York's Goodricke College and was dropped off by a colleague on Wednesday March 18.

Chief Inspector Dave Hannan, North Yorkshire Police's Deputy Head of Operations, said: "We have external open ground that needs searching for any evidence that leads us to Claudia."

On Wednesday, Detective Superintendent Ray Galloway leading the search for Miss Lawrence, said it was "extremely rare" for someone to be abducted from the street by a stranger. It was initially thought Miss Lawrence had been abducted during the three-mile walk from her home to Goodricke College on the Thursday morning, the day after she was last seen by someone.

But Mr Galloway said she did not appear on any CCTV footage from Thursday morning along her normal route to work. The detective said it was possible she had met up with someone the night before she disappeared.

Mr Galloway said police had no "tangible" evidence of a crime but there was no reason to believe Miss Lawrence had harmed herself as she was not depressed and had no financial problems. "I would appeal to anybody who knows of a historic relationship or association she might have had with somebody and that's where it will lie," he said.
