His own son has just returned from a tour of Iraq with the US Marine Corps.
The 71-year-old said both Harry and his brother Prince William were "role models", The Sun reported.
He said: "I regret that Harry's service was short-circuited by the unnecessary publication of his presence in Afghanistan.
"His willingness and his eagerness to serve provides an inspiration to other young men and women to serve the cause of freedom in Afghanistan.
"All of us Americans and British are proud of him. I respect and admire the Royal Family and I think those two young Princes are very good role models."
Vietnam war veteran Mr McCain will face either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama of the Democrats in the Presidential election in November.
During a stop-off in Britain as part of a week-long tour of Europe and the Middle East yesterday, Mr McCain praised the "long service and sacrifice" of British troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan while acknowledging the public frustration at the slow pace of progress.
He also warned that al Qaida remained undefeated in Iraq, despite recent successes against the insurgents.
