Serbia in appeal to UN on Kosovo

Serbia's president has recalled its ambassador from the US and asked the UN Security Council to intervene in a last bid to block Kosovo's independence.

Boris Tadic said the declaration of independence represented a precedent which would "cause irreparable damage to the international order".

Britain, France, the US and Germany all endorsed the declaration but some EU nations, including Spain, Romania and Greece, are opposed.

Gordon Brown welcomed Kosovo into the international fold despite concerns from other EU powers.

The Prime Minister announced that Britain would be officially recognising the new state in a bid to "close the chapter" following the fraught break-up of Yugoslavia.

US president George Bush hailed Kosovo's historic bid for statehood as Washington extended formal recognition as "a sovereign and independent state".

And French foreign minister Bernard Kouchner said Kosovo's declaration was "a great success for Europe, a great success for the Kosovars and certainly not a defeat for the Serbs".

As word of the recognition spread, ethnic Albanians poured into the streets of Pristina, the capital of Kosovo, to cheer and dance.

The republic's new flag - a blue banner with a yellow silhouette of Kosovo and six white stars representing each of the main ethnic groups - fluttered from homes and offices.
