Seven face trial over Rhys murder

A teenager charged with the murder of schoolboy Rhys Jones made his first appearance at Crown Court.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Liverpool Crown Court by video link. The youth spoke only to confirm his name.

Rhys, 11, was shot dead last August as he walked home from football practice.

His parents, Stephen and Melanie, attended the hearing before the Recorder of Liverpool, Henry Globe QC.

Six others charged in connection with the murder also appeared by video link.

James Yates, 20, of Dodman Road, Croxteth, Gary Kays, 25, of Mallard Close, and Melvin Coy, 24, of Addeyfield Drive, both West Derby, Liverpool, as well as a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old, who cannot be identified, are all charged with assisting an offender.

A second 16-year-old is charged with assisting an offender and possessing a firearm and ammunition.

Judge Globe told the defendants their trial is likely to take place on Thursday, October 2. A plea and case management hearing was listed for July 24.

No plea was entered and all seven were remanded in custody to appear again on June 30 when a hearing will take place on a trial venue.

Rhys, who was shot in the neck, died in his mother's arms in the car park of The Fir Tree pub in Croxteth, Merseyside.
