Shannon: Mother's 999 call released

A recording of the 999 call made by the mother of missing nine-year-old Shannon Matthews has been released by police.

The call is the one made by Karen Matthews on the evening of February 19, reporting her daughter's failure to return to their home in Dewsbury Moor, West Yorkshire.

There have been no confirmed sightings of Shannon since she left Westmoor Junior School, in Dewsbury, at 3.10pm that afternoon, despite a huge police operation to find her.

In the 71-second extract released by the police, Mrs Matthews, 32, appears to be in tears as the operator asks her if Shannon has gone missing before.

The mother-of-seven replies that she has not.

Mrs Matthews tells the operator she has searched everywhere but there has been no sign of her daughter.

She says: "I have been everywhere I can think of friends-wise, family and everything."

Mrs Matthews tells the operator there have been no arguments at home and how Shannon went to school as normal in the morning.

She says her daughter is normally home at 3.30pm at the latest.
