Rashid Ullah, who had been in a critical condition since the shooting on August 24, died at Birmingham Children's Hospital, West Midlands Police said.

Officers are treating the incident, which happened in the garden of Rashid's home in Washwood Heath, Birmingham, as a tragic accident.

In a short statement, a police spokeswoman confirmed that Rashid had died of injuries in hospital.

The youngster's family had previously urged anyone in possession of airguns to be wary of the possible consequences of injuries caused by them.

In a statement issued three days after the shooting, the toddler's family said: "We hope that anyone who has an air weapon realises how dangerous these guns can be and what serious injuries they can cause.

"We do not wish to add anything further at this difficult time for our family and would ask the media to respect our privacy."

The boy's grandfather has said that Rashid was accidentally shot by his five-year-old sister as they played with their father in the garden of their home.

The exact circumstances of how the weapon came to be discharged are still being investigated, but it is thought that Rashid's father, Bakht Zaman, was using the gun moments before the accident, which happened shortly before 7pm.
