The incident took place in Handsworth, Birmingham, at around midnight on Sunday, after a police traffic car followed a Vauxhall Astra, which had failed to stop, from the Lozells area.

When the Astra was involved in a crash, its four occupants got out and shots were fired at the police car, before they ran off.

A 19-year-old man was arrested shortly afterwards and is helping with inquiries, West Midlands Police said.

Forensics experts are examining the scene at the junction of College Road and Cornwall Road, Handsworth.

No officers were injured in the incident and the police car was not damaged.
