Silver Birch runs to National glory

Aintree racecourse basked in glorious sunshine as thousands of racegoers watched the 160th Grand National.

Bookmakers were offering even odds that it would be the hottest Grand National ever with temperatures that rose to around 22 degrees Celsius.

More than 70,000 people cheered on 33-1 Silver Birch, ridden by Robbie Power and trained by Gordon Elliott, to victory.

Second place went to McKelvey with Slim Pickings coming third and Philson Run fourth.

The weather meant that horses had to be regularly doused with cold water and extra supplies of bottled water and ice were brought in to the course.

The Merseyside racecourse has recently undergone a £35 million redevelopment.

A forecaster for MeteoGroup UK said: "We are predicting a great day for racing at Aintree with dry and sunny spells.

"It is very warm weather for the time of year and temperatures could get as high as 22 degrees Celsius. There is a very, very small chance of a shower but nothing to worry about, it should be a fabulous day."

A spokesman for bookmakers William Hill said: "The forecast for Grand National day is a scorcher. We are offering even money that the temperature record will be registered between the first and last race."

Elaine Howlings, training manager for St John Ambulance which had 150 volunteers working at the racecourse, warned spectators to take extra care in the warm weather.
