Officers were called at 1.40am on Tuesday to Towneley Park in Burnley, Lancashire and found the victim with multiple knife wounds and head injuries.
Paramedics and police tried to save her but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Six people, all from Burnley, were arrested on suspicion of murder. They are a woman, aged 19, and five males, two aged 20, one aged 22, and two others aged 17 and 18.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Gray, from Lancashire Police, said: "This was an horrific attack which left the 18-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds and serious head injuries.
"Despite the fact that this incident took place when it would have been dark and in a fairly secluded spot, people may still have information which could help us piece together exactly what happened.
"I would ask anybody who may have seen a group of people in their late teens or early 20s in the Towneley Park area between 11pm and 2am last night to contact police or indeed anyone who has any information at all about this assault.
"I would like to reassure the local community that this was an isolated incident and that people who ordinarily use this park should not be unduly worried."
Anyone with any information can contact police on 08451 25 35 45 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
