Smith faces leaks probe grilling

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith is to face a grilling from MPs over the police investigation into Home Office leaks, it was announced.

The Commons Home Affairs Committee said Ms Smith would be summoned to give evidence when MPs return to Westminster after the Christmas break.

An outcry erupted last month when shadow immigration minister Damian Green was arrested by police on suspicion of "conspiring to commit misconduct in a public office" after receiving a series of leaks.

The committee will also take evidence from Scotland Yard Assistant Commissioner Bob Quick, the officer in charge of the police investigation, and the Permanent Secretary at the Home Office, Sir David Normington, who decided to call in the police.

London Mayor Boris Johnson will also face questioning by the committee.

Committee chairman Keith Vaz said: "It is important that the decisions and actions of the Home Office and police are thoroughly examined in the context of existing guidelines.

"This will give members the opportunity fully to explore the aspects of this serious matter that causes them concern."
