Smith offers top job to pay critic

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has offered a job to a rank-and-file police representative who called for her resignation over a pay dispute.

Jan Berry, whose tenure as head of the Police Federation of England and Wales ended in May, has been asked to investigate police bureaucracy.

More efforts to speed up the drive to cut red tape and paperwork will feature in a Green Paper on policing.

The job offer suggested there is no bad blood between the two women despite Ms Berry's claims that Ms Smith had "betrayed" the police.

Ms Berry was "surprised and flattered" to be asked to lead a taskforce to reduce police paperwork, according to the BBC.

Earlier this year Ms Berry mocked the Home Secretary over her confession that she smoked cannabis in her youth during a speech to the Police Federation.

Ms Berry, who retired from her role as chief inspector in Kent weeks later, also described the decision not to backdate a pay rise as a "monumental mistake".

During the same speech Ms Berry also joked that she would soon be available for work if Ms Smith needed any help.

Ms Smith praised Ms Berry for her commitment to policing and said she hoped "we have not seen the last of you".

A Police Federation spokesman said the job offer was a personal decision for Ms Berry to consider.
