Entrepreneur Rob Williams, 29, was on a trip to the resort of Verbier when he went missing on Monday.
A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "We can confirm the death of a British national in Verbier on Monday night."
Mr Williams, who founded Liverpool-based online music equipment retailer Dolphin Music, died after reportedly becoming lost in a forest with friend Jason Tavaria. It is understood the businessman fell 60ft to his death.
The rescue operation to save the pair was played out on the social networking site Twitter, with the discovery of Mr Williams' body also reported on the site.
He was on holiday in a group which included Michelle Dewberry, the winner of the second series of TV show The Apprentice.
Mr Williams and Mr Tavaria, also 29, got into difficulty after becoming separated from fellow snowboarders in the upmarket resort.
Mr Tavaria, an Irish national, was found after Dewberry launched an online rescue on Twitter when she wrote: "2 of our ski party been missing since 4pm. Conditions terrible. 1 guy found but trapped. 20 man team searching for other."
The two men were part of a group of internet entrepreneurs who had gone on holiday together and the events unfolded on the web.
As well as its online business, Dolphin Music has three high street music shops in Liverpool, Gateshead and Huddersfield.
