The 24-year-old Manchester City and England midfielder was arrested by police after allegedly attacking fellow player Ousmane Dabo, 30, at the club's training ground in Carrington, south Manchester.
Barton, who has since been suspended by his club, was spoken to by officers and bailed until July 11 while police investigate the incident.
Dabo said Barton attacked him, leaving him bruised and battered and looking like "the Elephant Man".
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of a Section 20 assault following an incident when a 30-year-old man was assaulted at Carrington.
"The 24-year-old has been bailed until July 11 pending further inquiries."
It is not the first time Barton has been in trouble during a controversial spell at the Eastlands club.
Barton injured Jamie Tandy, a Man City junior player, by poking a cigar in his eye at a Christmas party. He was also sent home from a club pre-season tour in Thailand after a fight in a hotel bar with a 15-year-old Everton fan.
It resulted in Barton undergoing anger management therapy and paying massive club fines.
This season he was in trouble again after dropping his shorts to Everton fans after a last-minute equaliser by Man City at Goodison Park. He was also spoken to by police in March this year after a row with a taxi driver in Liverpool.
