Soldier killed by Taliban is named

A British soldier killed when his patrol came under fire from Taliban fighters in southern Afghanistan was named.

Private Tony Rawson, 27, from the 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment died on Friday while on a fighting patrol to disrupt enemy activity and reassure the local population in the area of Jusyalay, north east of Sangin, in Helmand, said the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Another soldier was wounded in the attack which happened shortly before 6am local time as the patrol was on its way to check on a local irrigation project.

Private Rawson, who was nicknamed "Nicey", lived with his fiancée Louise and her daughter Caitlin in Dagenham, Essex, the Ministry of Defence said.

A spokesman said: "He was a devoted family man and was planning to get married in March 2008.

"He was very excited and proud of the fact that they were expecting their first child."

He joined the Army in July 2002. He took part in a number of exercises in Britain, Italy and Kenya, and went on to serve in Iraq. He had served in Helmand since June.

Private Lee Olen, 11 Platoon, C (Essex) Company, said: "Tony Rawson aka 'Nicey'. What can I say? What a good bloke. Not a bad bone in his body. He loved the job with a passion and he will be sadly missed. Gone but never forgotten."

Defence Secretary Des Browne said: "It is a terrible blow to lose as experienced and talented a soldier as Private Rawson."

The death of Pte Rawson took the number of British military fatalities in Afghanistan since the start of operations in November 2001 to 69.
