Soldier killed in Afghanistan

A British soldier was killed in an explosion in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said.

He was serving with the Brigade Reconnaissance Force, 5 Regiment, Royal Artillery, a spokesman said.

"Two other British soldiers were also injured as a result of the blast," he added.

Next of kin have been informed.

The Ministry of Defence said that the soldiers were conducting a tactical patrol to the north of Sangin, Helmand Province, just after 1pm local time, when their vehicle was caught in the blast.

Medical treatment was provided before all three soldiers were evacuated to the field hospital at Camp Bastion.

"Despite the best efforts of the medical team, one of the soldiers sadly died as a result of his wounds," a spokesman said.

The injuries of the other two soldiers were not thought to be life-threatening.

There will be a "period of grace" before further details are released.
