Soldier killed in Afghanistan named

A soldier killed in an explosion in southern Afghanistan has been named by the Ministry of Defence.

Captain John McDermid of The Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland was killed on Wednesday by an improvised explosive device.

The 43-year-old was training Afghan army officers south of Sangin in Helmand province when the bomb went off, killing him and seriously injuring an Afghan interpreter.

Captain McDermid was serving with 2nd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment when he died.

Originally from Glasgow, he served for 21 years as a soldier after joining the 1st Battalion The Royal Highland Fusiliers in 1983. He made officer rank three years ago.

He served in Berlin, Canada, Kenya, Cyprus and Belize, conducted two tours in Bosnia, four in Northern Ireland and one in Iraq.

The MoD praised him as a "hugely experienced, skilled, knowledgeable and capable soldier".

He leaves his wife Gill, and three children. A family spokesman said: "John's family and friends are devastated by this loss.

"Everyone who knew John knew how loving, dedicated, strong, hilarious and truly wonderful he was. Although very much a family man, John's sense of duty and responsibility were never overlooked."

Lieutenant Colonel Paul Harkness, Commanding Officer of The Royal Highland Fusiliers, praised Capt McDermid's "professionalism, commitment and loyalty".
