Soldier killed in Afghanistan named

A British soldier killed in an explosion in southern Afghanistan has been named.

Trooper Jack Sadler, 21, of the Honourable Artillery Company, died while on patrol north of Sangin in Helmand Province on Tuesday, the Ministry of Defence said.

Two other British soldiers travelling with him were also injured when the blast hit their vehicle.

Trooper Sadler, who was from Devon but had recently lived in London, was a member of the Territorial Army who had volunteered to serve in Afghanistan.

He was taking part in a Brigade Reconnaissance Force tactical patrol when his unit came under attack at about 1pm local time.

The soldier and his two injured comrades received immediate medical treatment before being evacuated to the field hospital at Camp Bastion.

He died from his wounds, although the injuries of the other two were not thought to be life-threatening.

The MoD said Trooper Sadler, who leaves behind his parents, had remained "determined" to join the regular Army after his tour in Afghanistan.

Lieutenant Colonel Alastair Caie, commanding officer of the Honourable Artillery Company, said: "Whilst Trooper Jack Sadler has served with the Honourable Artillery Company for a relatively short period, his decision to volunteer for mobilised service at such an early stage in his career was typical of his commitment to the regiment and the reserve forces.

"Jack will be sorely missed by those who served with him and all serving and veteran members of the regiment."
