Soldier killed in Iraq is named

A soldier who died from injuries sustained in Iraq has been named by the Ministry of Defence.

Private Kevin Thompson, 21, of the Royal Logistics Corp, was seriously wounded on Thursday when a routine convoy to resupply the Basra Palace military base was hit by an improvised explosive device.

The soldier was treated at the field hospital in Basra Air Station before being flown back to Britain, where he died on Sunday afternoon.

Pte Thompson leaves behind his mother Teresa, father Mark, brother Andrew, sisters Nicola and Jade and fiancée Lucy.

His family was with him when he died.

"Tomo", as he was known, was described by Lieutenant Colonel Neil Lewis, his Commanding Officer in the UK, as "an extremely popular soldier who loved his job".

Lancaster-born Pte Thompson was a keen footballer, who joined the Army in 2004.

His Squadron Commander in Iraq, Major John Wallace-Dutton, said: "He was a soldier who people liked to be around.

"Everyone enjoyed his humour and respected him for his genuine loyalty and love for his family.

"He was a credit to his cap-badge and his trade and is a significant loss to my Squadron on operations - I need and rely on men like him."
