Son held after parents' found dead

The son of an elderly couple found dead more than 150 miles from their home is in custody, arrested on suspicion of their murder.

The victims, named locally as Elsie Crook, 76, and her 82-year-old husband Robert, were found in the garden of a house in Lincoln late on Wednesday evening. It is thought they could have been there for at least two days.

Their son, Timothy Crook, 43, is believed to be the man in custody in connection with their deaths. He is being held at a police station in the family's home town of Swindon, Wilts.

The couple's home in Thames Avenue, Swindon, as well as the house in Foxglove Way, Lincoln, is being examined by forensic experts.

A mushroom-coloured Nissan Micra car, registration WN07 CRO, which police were trying to trace as part of the investigation was found on Wednesday afternoon in Newark, Notts. The car is believed to have travelled between Swindon and Lincoln sometime between Saturday and Tuesday.

Detective Superintendent Steven Fulcher, of Wiltshire Police, who is leading the investigation, said police went to the house after a call from someone worried about the elderly couple.

Mr Fulcher said: "As a result of inquiries the bodies of an 82-year-old man and a 76-year-old woman were located at a premises in the Lincoln area. The couple's relatives in Swindon have been informed of the discovery and are currently being supported by specially-trained police liaison officers.

"At 7.30pm on Wednesday the couple's 43-year-old son was arrested at an address in Swindon on suspicion of murder. He is currently in custody at Gablecross police station."

The address where the bodies was found is in an estate of modern, detached houses on the outskirts of Lincoln.

Lincolnshire Police confirmed the bodies of the elderly couple were found in the garden of the house but said it was still too early to say exactly how and where they met their deaths.
